How to Use This CGPA & GPA Calculator

Setting up takes about a minute. Follow these steps:

  1. Choose what you have. Select Grades if your transcript shows letter grades such as A or B+. Select Marks / Numbers if you have obtained marks and total marks for each subject.
  2. Pick your grading scale. Start from the 4.0, 4.3, 5.0 or percentage preset, or build a custom scale that mirrors your university’s published policy.
  3. Add a semester, then add subjects. Enter the subject name, the credit hours, and either a grade or your marks. The grade point fills in automatically.
  4. Read your results. Semester GPA, overall CGPA, total credit hours and quality points update as you type.
  5. Explore scenarios. Test a target CGPA, a future semester, a grade improvement or a course retake.
  6. Save, print or share. Save your record in your browser, export it as a file, or print a transcript-style report.

You can add as many semesters and subjects as you need and rename each semester. You can also mark a course as pass/fail, audit, withdrawn, incomplete or excluded, so it stays out of your GPA when your university treats it that way.

What Is GPA?

GPA stands for grade point average. It measures your academic performance over a single term, usually one semester. Each course grade is converted to a grade point using a grading scale, multiplied by the course’s credit hours, and averaged across the semester.

This is why a semester GPA calculator has to ask for credit hours. A 4-credit course carries more weight than a 1-credit course, so the same grade can move your GPA by very different amounts.

What Is CGPA?

CGPA means cumulative grade point average. It summarises every semester you have completed, not just the latest one. A cumulative GPA calculator adds the quality points from all included courses and divides them by all included credit hours.

Many universities print CGPA on transcripts and use it for scholarships, honours, academic standing and graduation requirements. Because so much can depend on one number, it helps to understand exactly how it is built and to check it yourself.

GPA vs CGPA: What Is the Difference?

  • Time span: GPA covers one semester, while CGPA covers every completed semester.
  • Purpose: GPA shows how you performed recently, while CGPA shows your overall standing.
  • Calculation: GPA is quality points divided by that semester’s credit hours, while CGPA is total quality points divided by total credit hours.
  • Weighting: a heavy semester influences CGPA more than a light one.

The most common mistake is averaging semester GPAs to get CGPA. That only works when every semester has exactly the same number of credit hours, which is rarely the case. The worked example below shows the difference.

How to Calculate GPA (Formula and Example)

Step-by-step diagram showing how marks become a percentage, grade, grade point, quality points and a CGPA. CGPA & gpa calculatorGPA is a credit-weighted average. First calculate the quality points for each course, then divide the total by the total credit hours.

Quality Points = Credit Hours × Grade Point
Semester GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Worked example

  • Course A: 3 credit hours, grade A (4.00) = 12.00 quality points
  • Course B: 3 credit hours, grade B (3.00) = 9.00 quality points
  • Course C: 4 credit hours, grade B+ (3.30) = 13.20 quality points

Total quality points are 34.20 and total credit hours are 10, so the semester GPA is 34.20 ÷ 10 = 3.42. A plain average of the three grade points would give 3.43, which is close here but slightly off. The gap grows as the credit loads become more uneven.

How to Calculate CGPA (Formula and Example)

CGPA uses the same building blocks as GPA, but across every semester at once.

CGPA = Total Quality Points (all included courses)
÷ Total Credit Hours (all included courses)

Suppose Semester 1 had 18 credit hours and a 3.50 GPA, which is 63 quality points. Semester 2 had 15 credit hours and a 3.00 GPA, which is 45 quality points. Together that is 108 quality points over 33 credit hours, so your CGPA is 108 ÷ 33 = 3.27.

Averaging the two semester GPAs would give 3.25, which understates the heavier first semester. The calculator always works from total quality points and total credit hours, and keeps full precision internally so it rounds only the number it displays.

How Credit Hours Affect Your GPA

A GPA calculator with credit hours treats each course according to its weight, and a CGPA calculator with credit hours does the same across semesters. Consider two courses: an A (4.00) in a 1-credit lab and a C (2.00) in a 4-credit lecture course.

The simple average of 4.00 and 2.00 is 3.00. The credit-weighted result is (1 × 4.00 + 4 × 2.00) ÷ 5 = 2.40. The heavier course dominates, which is exactly why a credit hour GPA calculator beats a plain average. Decimal credit hours such as 1.5 are supported.

How to Convert Marks or Percentage to GPA

Marks do not turn into a GPA directly. They pass through a chain of conversions, and the grading scale is the link between a percentage and a grade point:

Marks → Percentage → Grade → Grade Point → Quality Points

Percentage = Obtained Marks ÷ Total Marks × 100. For example, 82 out of 100 is 82%. On the sample 4.0 preset in this calculator, 82% falls in the B- band (80 to 82.99%), which is worth 2.70 grade points. On a different scale, the same 82% could earn a different grade.

That is why you should never assume 82% equals a 3.82 GPA. A reliable marks to GPA calculator needs your grading scale, and a percentage to GPA calculator is only as accurate as the scale behind it. Select the correct scale first and enter obtained and total marks for each subject. Decimal marks are supported, and the calculator warns you if obtained marks exceed total marks. It also works as a simple grade calculator: enter a single subject to see its percentage, grade and grade point.

Grading Scales Explained: 4.0, 4.3, 5.0 and Custom

Universities do not all use the same scale, so this university GPA calculator ships with editable presets rather than one fixed table.

4.0 GPA calculator preset

The 4.0 scale is the most familiar. This example preset is included as a starting point only. Your university’s published scale always takes priority.

  • A+ (97 to 100%): 4.00 | A (93 to 96.99%): 4.00 | A- (90 to 92.99%): 3.70
  • B+ (87 to 89.99%): 3.30 | B (83 to 86.99%): 3.00 | B- (80 to 82.99%): 2.70
  • C+ (77 to 79.99%): 2.30 | C (73 to 76.99%): 2.00 | C- (70 to 72.99%): 1.70
  • D+ (67 to 69.99%): 1.30 | D (60 to 66.99%): 1.00 | F (0 to 59.99%): 0.00

4.3 and 5.0 scales, plus custom scales

Some institutions give an A+ a value above 4.0, so a 4.3 preset is available. A 5.0 GPA calculator preset is also included for institutions that top out at 5.0. If neither matches, build a custom scale with your own grade labels, percentage ranges and grade points.

The custom scale editor checks your work. It flags overlapping percentage ranges, warns about gaps, rejects duplicate labels and stops grade points from exceeding the scale maximum. You can save several named scales, for example one per university or department.

GPA and CGPA in Pakistan

Universities in Pakistan publish their own grading policies. Grade boundaries, GPA scales and repeat-course rules can differ from one institution to another, even within the same city or degree program. A Pakistan GPA calculator that assumes one national scale can therefore give you the wrong answer.

Using this as a Pakistan CGPA calculator

  1. Find your university’s grading policy in its academic regulations, student handbook or from your department or examination office.
  2. Select the closest preset, or build a custom scale that matches your letter grades, percentage ranges and grade points.
  3. Enter the credit hours and grade or marks for each course, semester by semester.
  4. Compare the result with your result card. If it differs, check rounding, repeat-course and pass/fail rules in the policy.

For general higher-education guidance you can also consult the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan, but your own university’s published policy decides your official result. This tool is not affiliated with HEC or any university.

GPA to CGPA and CGPA to GPA: What the Conversion Really Means

A GPA to CGPA calculator does not average your semester GPAs. It combines them using credit hours:

CGPA = (GPA1 × Credits1 + GPA2 × Credits2 + ...) ÷ (Credits1 + Credits2 + ...)

Enter each semester separately and the calculator applies this automatically. Going the other way, CGPA to GPA is not a direct conversion either, because CGPA is cumulative. You can recover one semester’s GPA if you know the totals. For instance, if your CGPA moves from 3.00 over 60 credits to 3.10 over 75 credits, the new semester contributed 52.50 quality points over 15 credits, a GPA of 3.50.

Converting between scales, such as a 10-point scale to a 4.0 scale, follows rules set by your institution or an evaluator. This calculator does not guess those rules. Use a custom scale that matches your university instead.

Target CGPA Calculator: What GPA Do You Need?

A target CGPA calculator works backward from a goal. Instead of asking what your CGPA will be, it asks what average GPA you need across your remaining credit hours to reach a specific CGPA. Some people call this a required GPA calculator.

Required GPA = [(Target CGPA × (Completed + Remaining Credits))
− (Current CGPA × Completed Credits)] ÷ Remaining Credits

Example: your CGPA is 3.00 after 60 credit hours, you have 30 credit hours left, and your target is 3.30. The required average is (3.30 × 90 − 3.00 × 60) ÷ 30 = 3.90. That is demanding but mathematically possible on a 4.0 scale.

If the answer is above your scale’s maximum, the target is not mathematically achievable with the credits remaining. If it is zero or negative, your current CGPA already meets the target. Neither result is a promise about the future. They only show what the arithmetic allows.

Future CGPA Calculator: Project Your Next Semester

A future CGPA calculator answers a different question: what happens to my CGPA if I earn a certain GPA next semester? You enter your current CGPA, completed credits, an expected GPA and the credits you plan to take.

For example, a 3.20 CGPA over 60 credits combined with a 3.80 GPA over 15 credits gives (3.20 × 60 + 3.80 × 15) ÷ 75 = 3.32. Use a realistic expected GPA. The projection is only as reliable as the number you supply.

GPA Improvement Calculator and Course Retake Simulator
Bar chart of semester GPAs rising toward a dashed target CGPA line. CGPA & GPA Calculator

A GPA improvement calculator, also useful as a CGPA improvement calculator, shows how changing one course grade moves your overall CGPA. It converts your CGPA back into total quality points, swaps the old course contribution for the new one, and divides by your completed credit hours.

Example: your CGPA is 3.00 over 60 credits (180 quality points). Improving a 3-credit course from 2.00 to 4.00 adds 6 quality points, so the estimate becomes 186 ÷ 60 = 3.10.

The retake simulator uses the same math and assumes the new grade replaces the old one. Policies differ: some universities replace the old grade, some average both attempts, and some keep both on the transcript. Treat the result as an estimate and confirm your repeat-course policy before you enroll again.

Why Your University’s CGPA May Differ From a Calculator

If your result card shows a different number, one of these institution-specific rules is the usual cause:

  • Rounding: some universities round each grade point or the final CGPA differently.
  • Repeat and retake rules: replacement, averaging or counting both attempts.
  • Pass/fail and audit courses: counted in GPA at some institutions and excluded at others.
  • Withdrawn and incomplete courses: normally excluded until resolved, but policies vary.
  • Transfer credits: sometimes counted for credit only, sometimes included in CGPA.
  • Grading scale: boundaries and grade points that differ from the preset you selected.

This calculator lets you set each course status and build a custom scale for exactly these reasons. Your official transcript and your university’s academic regulations always take priority.

Practical Ways to Raise Your CGPA

  • Know what each credit hour is worth. Raising a 4-credit course by one full grade point adds 4 quality points, while the same improvement in a 1-credit course adds only 1.
  • Set a target early. Use the required GPA to see whether a goal is realistic while you still have many credit hours left.
  • Compare retake candidates. Multiply a course’s credit hours by the grade-point gain you expect, then check your university’s repeat policy.
  • Plan your credit load. A very light or very heavy semester changes how much one GPA can move your CGPA.
  • Recheck after every result. Update your marks or grades as soon as they are published so your projections stay current.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CGPA calculator?

A CGPA calculator converts your courses, credit hours and grades or marks into a cumulative grade point average. It uses credit-hour-weighted quality points rather than a simple average of semester GPAs.

How do I calculate my CGPA?

Multiply each course’s credit hours by its grade point to get quality points. Add the quality points from every included course, then divide by the total credit hours of those courses.

How is a GPA calculator different from a CGPA calculator?

GPA usually refers to a single semester, while CGPA covers every completed semester. This tool gives you both: the semester GPA for each term and the overall CGPA.

How do I calculate semester GPA?

Add up credit hours multiplied by grade point for every course in the semester, then divide by that semester’s total credit hours. The calculator shows it under each semester automatically.

Can I calculate GPA with credit hours?

Yes. Credit hours are required for each course so every grade is weighted correctly. Decimal values such as 1.5 are accepted.

Can I calculate CGPA for multiple semesters?

Yes. Add as many semesters as you need and rename them. The overall CGPA combines quality points and credit hours from all of them.

How do I convert marks to GPA?

Switch to Marks / Numbers, enter obtained and total marks, and the tool calculates the percentage, finds the grade in your selected scale, and applies its grade point. The scale you choose decides the result.

Can I calculate GPA from percentage?

Yes. Enter your marks to get the percentage, and the grading scale maps it to a grade and grade point. A percentage never converts to GPA without a scale.

Does it work as a 4.0 GPA calculator and a 5.0 GPA calculator?

Yes. Editable 4.0, 4.3, 5.0 and percentage presets are included, and you can build and save custom scales for any other system.

Does it work for Pakistani universities?

Yes, as long as you select or build the grading scale your university publishes. Pakistani institutions do not share one universal policy, so a custom scale is often the most accurate choice.

How do I calculate the GPA I need for a target CGPA?

Use the target CGPA calculator. Enter your current CGPA, completed credits, remaining credits and target, and it returns the average GPA you would need across those remaining credits.

Can I calculate my future CGPA?

Yes. Enter an expected GPA and the credits you plan to take next semester, and the future CGPA calculator projects your new cumulative CGPA.

Can I simulate improving a grade or retaking a course?

Yes. The improvement and retake simulators estimate your new CGPA after a grade change. Retake policies vary by university, so confirm yours before relying on the estimate.

What is a good CGPA?

It depends on your institution, program and goals. Scales and thresholds differ, so check your university’s published standards rather than a universal number.

Is my data stored online, and do I need an account?

No account is needed. Data is saved only if you click Save, and it stays in your own browser. Export it if you want to move it to another device.

Why is my university’s CGPA different from this calculator?

The usual causes are rounding, repeat-course rules, pass/fail handling, transfer credits or a different grading scale. Compare against your official transcript and academic regulations.

Is the calculator free, and does it work on mobile?

It is free to use and works on phones, tablets and desktops. The layout adapts to your screen size.

Final Thoughts

A reliable CGPA calculator does three things: it weights every course by credit hours, it lets you use the grading scale your university actually publishes, and it shows its working so you can trust the result. Scroll up to enter your grades or marks, check your semester GPA and cumulative GPA, then use the target, future and improvement tools to plan your next move. For official figures, always rely on your university’s transcript.

Sources & Methodology

Calculations follow the standard credit-hour-weighted quality-point method used by most universities worldwide. Grading scale presets are provided as general, editable starting points rather than authoritative standards. For Pakistan-specific policy questions, consult your university’s official academic regulations or the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan’s published guidance. This tool does not replace, and is not affiliated with, any university’s official transcript or registrar’s office.
